The North Vietnamese government only believed in a single economic system and because of this, those who wished to follow capitalism or the West, were persecuted, executed or had to be reeducated. Their philosophy and way of life were modeled after China and the Soviet Union. This new government believed and followed the ideology of Marxism and Communism. The North Vietnamese Army proclaimed victory over the South of Vietnam on April 30, 1975. All who supported and had America as their ally had to flee. Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and the Hmong and Mien people in the mountains of Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia were affected too. Vietnam was not the only country that got affected by the war. When the war ended in April of 1975, after the last withdrawal of American marines from the US embassy in Saigon, the mass exodus of political refugees followed. To me, this war not only directly affected me or my family, it affected a lot of people in Southeast Asia as it displaced a whole generation of people. Some considers this war to be “small” and to be “insignificant” in term of historical importance. For this I am very proud of her and I miss her terribly. Hhmmm … 1954!?Īnh Hong-Bo 7 Mon, my grandmother’s menu, is now considered a cultural dish just like pho or banh mi. 1954 was also the year that my grandmother opened her restaurant Anh Hong-Bo 7 Mon in Phu Nhuan. ![]() ![]() 1954 was also the year that America officially entered Vietnam and thus the start of the Vietnam-American War. This beverage became very popular in Southeast Asia. Imagine you are holding a nice cold beer in the middle of the jungle. Imagine a nice cold, carbonated beverage loaded with alcohol in the middle of a hot tropical city. You see, it was around 1954 when beer became very popular in Southeast Asia, especially in Vietnam. Our beer story – Where shall I start? Shall I start with the age when I first started to drink beer? Or shall I start with the day I wanted to make beer? Or shall I start with how I came up with the name Asian Brothers Brewing Company? Or shall I start with how all these Southeast Asian people got here to America? Perhaps I shall start with the year 1954.
